For the sixth year in a row, the City of Lynnwood, in partnership with Edmonds Community College, Edmonds School District, and the YWCA of Snohomish County, is hosting a free citywide Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at the Lynnwood Convention Center.
Join us Thursday, January 12, as we celebrate the life and teachings of Dr. King through music, dance, and a celebration of our community with an inspirational message from keynote speaker Van Jones. Refreshments are at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 7.
ASL and Spanish interpreters will be available.
Jones is a globally recognized, award-winning pioneer in human rights and the clean-energy economy, a best-selling author, and past green jobs adviser for the Obama Administration.
Van Jones’ message, “Rebuild the Dream: The Next American Economy,” will focus on the importance of continuing Dr. King’s dream; the green collar economy – the importance of job creation in a clean-energy environment; the impact of civil rights from past to present; how the American Dream is under siege; and about the new movement that is rising all across American to fight back.
There will be musical and dance performances by students of Edmonds School District and Edmonds Community College, as well as a special performance by the Total Experience Gospel Choir, hailed as one of the Pacific Northwest’s finest soulful ensembles.
Other community sponsors include Central Washington University, Journal Media Group, Friends of the Lynnwood Library, Hampton Inn & Suites, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Snohomish County Chapter, and the Communities of Color Coalition.
While honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King, this celebration creates a positive atmosphere that encourages mutual understanding and respect for our growing and changing community.
